Australian volunteers prepared for departure

Posted 22 February 2013 2:24pm

The Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program sends Australians on volunteer placements in developing countries throughout Asia, the Pacific, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. The program enables Australian volunteers to be part of Australian’s overseas aid program and work with local communities to share knowledge and build capacity in line with AusAID’s development priorities.

ANUE assembled a high calibre team of experts and facilitators from ANU and across Australia to brief the departing volunteers on issues such as living and working cross-culturally and volunteering in development. Participants represented all streams of the Australian Volunteers program, including the Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development, and were provided with an intensive training program designed to help them be effective in their placements.

These volunteers will join the thousands of Australians who have already been deployed on assignments in 33 countries and are using their skills and knowledge to help reduce poverty.

The volunteers attended a formal farewell at Old Parliament House on 13 February - please visit the AusAID website to read the story.
